Sonnabend Collection Mantova
February 2, 2026

Magazzino Italian Art Museum co-founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu visited today the Sonnabend Collection Mantova — a unique art collection developed through the vision of Ileana Sonnabend (1914–2007), her husband Michael Sonnabend (1900–2001), and their adopted son Antonio Homem.
The collection stands as a crucial testimony to the artistic movements that defined the latter half of the twentieth century. Currently housed in the Renaissance city of Mantua, it is displayed in the beautifully restored Palazzo della Ragione, featuring a remarkable installation by architect Federico Fedel.
As Mantua Mayor Mattia Palazzi remarked:
“The Sonnabend Collection Mantova is both a gift to the present and a promise to the future.”
Ezio Zani, a prominent Mantua attorney, also noted:
“This is a project that broadens the perspective and strengthens Mantua’s universal vocation as a city of art, knowledge and freedom.”
An exhibition not to be missed.
Grazie Ezio, Federico, and Mattia for hosting us.
Nancy and Giorgio
