Abstract In the early months of 1980, Michelangelo Pistoletto held exhibitions and events across the San Francisco Bay Area, including Rags at the Berkeley Art Museum—the first U.S. showing of Venus of the Rags—and the performance Venus and the Big Dipper. Engaging with new audiences and contexts, Pistoletto established a profound and productive dialogue with the new cultural and social context. Drawing on unpublished archival sources, the article examines how travel functioned as a tool for artistic exploration and renewal during his Bay Area stay.
