In Memoriam: Antonio Homem

Magazzino Italian Art mourns the passing of Antonio Homem, a respected art dealer, curator, and devoted steward of one of the most significant collections of 20th-century art. As the adopted son of Ileana Sonnabend, Homem carried forward an extraordinary legacy, playing a vital role in the leadership of the Sonnabend Gallery in both Paris and New York.

Through his co-founding of the Sonnabend Collection Foundation, he ensured the preservation and continued public engagement of a collection that has profoundly shaped the understanding of postwar art.

The Sonnabend Collection in Mantua, inaugurated in November 2025 at the historic Palazzo della Ragione, is a premier contemporary art museum Through a partnership between the municipality and the Sonnabend Collection Foundation, it houses significant Pop Art and Arte Povera.

Antonio Homem’s thoughtful dedication to artists and institutions alike leaves a lasting imprint on the international art community. We honor his life and contributions, and extend our deepest condolences to those who knew and worked alongside him.
