Giulio Paolini: A New Book, a Madrid Exhibition, and the "ARTISTA ITALIANO 2025" Honor

May 5, 2025

A new book by Giulio Paolini

Entirely curated by the author, this book combines reflections on his poetics and considerations of a private nature. The texts are interspersed with a wide selection of reproductions of works, personal photographs, and some never-before-seen plates.

Paolini himself defines it as “a sort of ‘personal diary’, determined by works and images of life that, over the course of time, have marked my many years of experience, from the 1960s to the present. A path that is coherent but always different as well, renewed in the sequence of biographical and exhibition events that are recalled.”

Giulio Paolini e Luca Bertolo. Dietro l’opera
Italian Cultural Institute, Madrid
8 March – 10 May 2025

The exhibition curated by Elena Volpato at the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid creates a dialogue between seventeen works by Giulio Paolini and Luca Bertolo, dated from 1963 to 2024. The selection of works retraces a common questioning of the reflexive nature of art and of the poetic and conceptual space that lies “behind the work”. The exhibition is held in three rooms, each of which suggests a point of contact between the two artists: the relationship between the recto and the verso of the canvas, the ambiguous image-statute of the flag, and the representation of absence.

The exhibition produced by the Italian Cultural Institute in Madrid, under the aegis of the Italian Embassy in Spain, with the collaboration of GAM Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin and of the Fondazione Torino Musei, is accompanied by a catalogue published by Allemandi, with an essay and entries for the works on display curated by Elena Volpato.
