On the occasion of the centenary of Fabio Mauri’s birth (1926–2009), Magazzino Italian Art welcomes internationally renowned curator and art historian Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev for a special presentation of the artist’s newly published catalogue raisonné.
A central figure in postwar Italian art, Fabio Mauri developed a groundbreaking artistic practice encompassing painting, drawing, installation, performance, and film. Throughout his career, he explored the relationship between images, ideology, history, and collective memory, addressing some of the most pressing questions of the twentieth century, from the legacy of Fascism and the Holocaust to the mechanisms of mass communication and the construction of cultural identity.
Edited by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and published by Hatje Cantz and Allemandi, the catalogue raisonné represents a major scholarly undertaking, documenting the breadth and complexity of Mauri’s artistic production.
In this presentation, Christov-Bakargiev will discuss the research behind the publication, the challenges of documenting Mauri’s multifaceted practice, and the significance of this comprehensive work for understanding the artist’s enduring contribution to contemporary art.
The Italian version of the catalogue is published by Allemandi Editore, while the international English edition is published by Hatje Cantz. The printed catalogue raisonné is produced by MAMbo–Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna of Settore Musei Civici del Comune di Bologna together with Studio Fabio Mauri, Associazione per l’Arte L’Esperimento del Mondo and supported by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (14th edition, 2025), with the aim of promoting Italian contemporary art internationally.
