Nuovo Cinema Paradiso

Giuseppe Tornatore, Italy, 1988, 155 min., Italian with English subtitles

Set just after the end of World War II in a small Sicillian village, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso tells the story of a young boy, Salvatore, who becomes mesmerized by the operations at a local movie house. Frequenting the establishment in all of his spare time, he befriends the projectionist, Alfredo, who teaches him all he knows, sparking in him a passion for film and urging him to pursue his own career. Collaboration with Artecinema: Sulle Trace di Maria Lai
Maddalena Bregani, Italy, 2020, 56 min., Italian with subtitles

Directed by Maddalena Bregani, the film reconstructs the path and legacy of Maria Lai, a unique artist originally from Sardinia. The film traces her artistic practice by decade, from the turning point in the 1960s with her sewn canvas, breads, to collective action carried out with citizens of Ulassai in 1981. Reconstructed with care and tactile and optical sensuality, the film includes interview with friends, critics, fellow artists, and collaborators to place Lai within the currents of the 20th century.
