Organized by renowned opera countertenor Nicholas Tamagna, the singer was joined by Inessa Zaretsky on piano to perform Le Nuove Musiche Fra Passato e Futuro, a contemporary composition that blends famous and forgotten, classic and avant-garde songs expressing the beauty of the Italian language and its rich poetic traditions. Additionally, Italian-American composers Rolando Gori and Raphael Fusco premiered two songs specifically written for the event. The program included other composers, including Stefano Donaudy, Ottorino Respighi, Gian Carlo Menotti, Luigi Dallapiccola, Elsa Olivieri-Siangiacomo, Francesco Paolo Tosti, Alfredo Casella, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Fabio Vacchi, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Luciano Berio, Giorgio Federico Ghedini, and Riccardo Zandonai.

“When I first visited Magazzino, I was immediately inspired to create this program especially for this space,” says Tamagna, in discussing his inspiration for the program, “From the art to the acoustics of the architecture, I was struck by the wealth of contemporary art from Italy and the Italian diaspora that I knew so little about, I felt drawn to explore the parallel in music–a terra incognita for me–the modern and contemporary Italian art song repertory.”

“Since launching Magazzino Italian Art Foundation, we have launched interactive events and programming initiatives to engage Hudson Valley audiences in Italian artistic production across disciplines,” says director Vittorio Calabrese, “Building off our summer Italian cinema series, we are so thrilled to collaborate with Nicholas to present Le Nuove Musiche Fra Passato e Futuro this winter.”
